  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2.25 teaspoons)
  • 1.5 cups warm water (about 110°F)

Preparation

  • In a bowl, combine warm water and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour and salt until well combined.
  • Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Pour in the yeast mixture and stir until the dough comes together.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

Rising

  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
  • Punch down the risen dough gently, then shape it into a round loaf.
  • Place the shaped loaf on a baking sheet or in a Dutch oven; let it rise for another 30-60 minutes, covered loosely with a towel.

Baking

  • 30 minutes before baking, preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
  • If using a Dutch oven, remove the lid after 30 minutes and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until golden brown. If not, simply bake on the baking sheet for 25-30 minutes.
  • Once baked, remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.

Notes

For added flavor, try incorporating herbs, garlic, cheese, or olives into the dough. Store leftovers in a sealed container for up to three days or freeze for longer storage. This bread is versatile and pairs well with various meals.
