Ingredients

  • For the Cake:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • For the Custard Filling:
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • For the Chocolate Ganache:
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Prepare the Cake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch cake pans. In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, butter, eggs, milk, baking powder, and vanilla until smooth. Pour batter into pans and bake for 25-30 minutes. Let cool.
  • Make the Custard Filling: In a saucepan, heat milk until warm. In a separate bowl, whisk sugar, cornstarch, and egg yolks. Slowly pour in warm milk while whisking. Return to heat and stir until thickened. Add vanilla and let cool.
  • Prepare the Chocolate Ganache: Heat heavy cream in a saucepan until simmering. Pour over chocolate chips and stir until smooth. Let cool slightly.
  • Assemble the Cake: Place one cake layer on a plate, spread the custard filling evenly, and top with the second cake layer. Pour ganache over the top, letting it drip down the sides.
  • Chill & Serve: Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to set the custard and ganache. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Chill Time: Make sure to refrigerate the assembled cake for at least an hour to allow the custard and ganache to set properly.
  • Custard Consistency: If your custard is too thick, you can add a little more milk to adjust the consistency.
  • Cake Layers: You can use a pre-made cake mix for a quicker option, but homemade cake layers provide a more authentic taste.
  • Chocolate Ganache Tip: For a glossy finish, ensure the ganache is not too hot when pouring it over the cake.
  • Serving Tip: Let the cake come to room temperature for about 10-15 minutes before serving for the best flavor and texture.
