Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk (any kind)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar Adjust to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pinch salt

Preparation

  • In a small saucepan, pour in 2 cups of milk and place it over medium heat.
  • While the milk heats up, in a small bowl, mix together the cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and pinch of salt.

Cooking

  • Once the milk is warm (but not boiling), add the cocoa mixture. Whisk vigorously to ensure there are no lumps.
  • Keep stirring until the cocoa is fully blended and the mixture is steaming (but again, do not let it boil).
  • Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Pour your hot cocoa into mugs and top with whipped cream or marshmallows as desired.

Serving

  • Serve immediately and enjoy the comforting warmth of your homemade hot cocoa!

Notes

Use almond, oat, or coconut milk for a dairy-free version. Add a sprinkle of cinnamon for a spicy twist. Swap sugar with honey or maple syrup for a natural sweetener.
