Ingredients
  

Dough ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm milk Temperature should be warm but not boiling.
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Filling ingredients

  • 1 cup shredded cheese Cheddar, mozzarella, or your choice.
  • 1/2 cup cooked and crumbled bacon or sausage Optional
  • Herbs (such as chives or parsley) For garnish

Preparation

  • In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast on top and let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together melted butter, egg, and salt. Add the foamy yeast mixture once ready.
  • Gradually mix in the flour, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  • While the dough rises, prepare your filling. If using bacon or sausage, cook and crumble them. Set aside.

Assembly and Baking

  • Once risen, turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Roll it into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Sprinkle the cheese and bacon or sausage over the dough evenly, then roll the dough up tightly from the longer side.
  • Slice the rolled dough into about 12 pieces, then place them cut side up in a greased baking dish.
  • Cover the dish with a cloth and let the rolls rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  • Remove from the oven, let cool for a few minutes, and garnish with herbs before serving.

Notes

You can make the dough ahead of time and freeze them for a quick breakfast option. Various cheeses and fillings can be used for different flavors.
